Locks of Compassion

Considering a lock is defined as a device that restricts access and confines, you may wonder how it can possibly be associated with compassion. But, did you know a lock can also be a symbol of promise, enduring friendship and love? A lock links and unites one to another. In many parts of the world “love locks” attached to bridges and even metal trees have expressed uniting one to another. The “Locks of Compassion” project will re-create a symbolic expression of unity regarding a spirit of compassion for the refugee children and families we serve. With a gift of $10 you will be provided a lock to decorate with signs, symbols, and words of compassion.

Detailed Description

 

The "Locks of Compassion" Project is a community focused project that both
creates awareness and unites Rochester and all those who visit our city this
summer around a spirit of Compassion. As Rochester represents the
aspirations of a City of Compassion in our nation...The "Locks of
Compassion" Project will reinforce that virtue with deeds. The proceeds of
sale of the locks that will be displayed will benefit the refugee children
and families served through Catholic Charities.

The many facets of this project includes inclusivity of all in our
community. There are many coming on as sponsors for this project
(physicians, business owners, etc.). We will have lock tags that will be
laminated of individual locks designating "Community Compassion Partners
(i.e. Channel One, Library, Salvation Army, etc). Pledge cards for those
across our nation who support this effort will also be laminated to a lock.
Letters have been sent to many leaders including the Dalai Lama, The Pope,
our legislators, CEO's of Google, Amazon, Twitter, etc., etc.

We will work with some schools and organizations prior to the June 1st date
for the display. A WSU class is presently creating locks to be used. Our
hope is to bring hundreds of locks for a ceremony at the display with Mayor
Brede leading the way (with other leaders ) on June 20th-(World Refugee Day)
when several hundred locks will be attached. Our hope is to have a table to
sell and help adults and children create and attach their locks on Thursdays
on First at the sight of the display.

About Beam

Community Beam (dmcbeam.org) is a registry of private and public resources (organizations, projects, initiatives, programs) that underpin economic and social developments of greater Rochester:

  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
