Site Information
About Beam

Community Beam (dmcbeam.org) is a registry of private and public resources (organizations, projects, initiatives, programs) that underpin economic and social developments of greater Rochester:

  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.

The following defines the various project phases:
  1. Available - a product, program or service is in production
  2. Develop - program or application is being developed
  3. Plan - idea is solid, stakeholders are identified, and there is strong commitment to go forward from all parties.
  4. Concept Phase - idea scoped out with enough details to give an early sizing and/or to build a proof of concept

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

  • Hawthorne Education Center: Adults, 17 years and older, can improve their skills in reading, writing, math and computer. Face to face classes are available with a teacher, as well as computer-based programs. These classes can help you get prepared for college and/or employment. Hours: 8:30 a.m. -8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Allies & Advocates

  • Diversity Council: Allies & Advocates is a community response program that nurtures and supports individuals experiencing heightened anxiety, uncertainty, or incidents of hate/bias in this challenging social and cultural climate. We have been receiving communications regularly and increasingly from individuals deeply affected by what is transpiring here in Rochester, in our state, nationally, even globally. We want to be able to field these calls with empathy and wisdom. We decided to tap our greatest resource – compassionate people.

Art4Trails

  • Rochester Arts and Cultural Collaborative: A Project of the Programming and Public Art Team Rochester Arts and Culture Collaborative (RACC) Call for Art Art4Trails is seeking proposals for outdoor, site-specific art installations at up to five locations along the bike trails near downtown Rochester. The art will be installed between May 1 and June 1, 2016, pending funding for the project. One proposal for each site will be selected, and the artist will be awarded $2000 per site, $1000 upon selection and $1000 after installation. Applications open October 1, 2015, and close November 30, 2015.

Barbershops Creating Change in the Community

  • Barbershop & Social Services: BCCC is a coalition of Black barbers, beauticians and owners in Minnesota who are advancing a more just Minnesota for their communities. For years, barbershops have been staples of communities as they provide both individual and collective empowerment, esteem and moral. These are spaces where people come for physical and communal transformation. At the core, barber and beauty shops foster intentional relationships with community members while also providing a service.

Be Smart for Kids

  • A program of © 2022 Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund: The Be SMART campaign was launched to raise awareness that secure gun storage—storing guns locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition—can save children’s lives. Be SMART emphasizes that it’s an adult responsibility to keep kids from accessing guns, and that every adult can play a role in keeping kids and communities safer. There are thousands of Be SMART volunteers in your communities and neighborhoods that are delivering the Be SMART message across the country in all 50 states.

Berkman Apartments (Alatus Development)

  • Alatus, LLC: A more than $100 million housing and commercial development is proposed for a high-profile corner of Second Street Southwest, next to Mayo Clinic's Saint Marys campus. The plans call for a 13-story building with two levels of underground parking to be built on more than two acres at the southwest corner of 14th Avenue Southwest and Second Street. The Brentwood on 2nd and the Ray-Mar Motel stand on that corner. The hotels, along with some nearby houses, will be demolished to clear the way for the project. The Brentwood also houses several businesses, including City Market, Charlie's Eatery & Pub, A Shared Smile and the Healing Touch Spa.

  • Community Education: Hawthorne Education Center: Join the many students who have started their college career at Hawthorne Education Center! We offer unique enrollment options to accommodate our students with diverse experiences and needs. We also offer additional resources in the following areas: Applying for RCTC & for Financial Aid Career Planning and Job Placement Academic Support at both Hawthorne and RCTC

Bryk Apartments

  • Bryk: A new workforce housing development project will bring affordable living options to downtown Rochester. If all goes as planned, 180 families of modest means will celebrate the December 2022 holiday season in their new homes at the Bryk on Broadway. Perhaps a new college graduate working as a lab technician, or an immigrant family working side jobs while upskilling at RCTC, or a retired couple who want to free themselves of the chores of owning a home will be among its first residents. All will have an easy walk, bike, or bus ride to great job opportunities, incredible parks and trails, a first-class library and community center, and a robust set of retail, dining, and entertainment options.

Building Benchmarking

  • City of Rochester, MN: The Rochester Energy Benchmarking Program provides a platform for Rochester business and building owners to track their energy use and identify ways to save money on utility bills.

  • Rochester Area Builders (RAB): To better engage the future leaders of the building industry, as they will be our community leaders, board members, developers, and investors for years to come. To ensure they have a voice now and in the future.

Age-Friendly Olmsted County (AFOC) Plan

  • Family Service Rochester: Age-Friendly Olmsted County (AFOC) is a cross-sector initiative to ensure that residents of Olmsted County have what they need to live with autonomy and dignity in all life’s stages. When Olmsted County became a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities in early 2020, it officially joined a global movement, with roots in the World Health Organization, to help cities and communities respond to an aging population and prepare for a permanently older society.

Building Out Community Mobilization Resources Coalition

  • Community Mobilization Resource Coalition (CMRC): Purpose: Change power dynamics to create a pluralistic and intercultural community where all people benefit equitably. Goal: Create equitable access to community resources and civic involvement.

City of Rochester Initiates New Budget Process and Publishes Digital Format

  • City of Rochester, MN: The budget development process for 2019 has been revised as the City of Rochester transitions to a revenue first, multi-year budget. It is anticipated to be fully implemented over a two year period (2018 and 2019), with significant progress being made this year.

Commitment to Action for Racial Justice project

  • Rochester Area Nonprofit Consortium: Evaluate the resources available for listen, learn and act. Explore the onboarding process for undersigned. Forming steering committee for the project

Create a regional brand and communication platform

  • Journey to Growth Partnership : Create a regional brand and communication platoform

DMC Accountability Metrics

  • DMC EDA: 1. To be able to best track, present and communicate the progress of the DMC initiative 2. Monitor broader social and economic conditions of the district.

DMC Discovery Square

  • DMC EDA: DMC’s Discovery Square, which will include the current Minnesota BioBusiness Center, is anticipated to be one of the largest drivers for job growth as it positions Rochester to attract medical innovators and researchers with the ultimate goal of commercializing new medical discovery and businesses throughout the city and the state. A feasibility study of the proposed biobusiness hub Discovery Square is expected in February of 2016, according to Economic Development Agency Director and Mayo Clinic Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Bolton. The study, which is being funded by Mayo Clinic, will evaluate the extent to which Mayo Clinic and DMC might attract investment and entrepreneurs to Rochester, in addition to potential developer revenue streams and other types of industries that might be interested. “We’re hoping this serves as a hotbed of innovation that pushes us toward new modes of development,” Bolton said.

Developing and Executing on Cradle to Career Plan

  • Cradle to Career: Every child and young adult succeeds cradle to career, through shared purpose, alignment and accountability among community partners This is the purpose of the Cradle to Career initiative in Rochester, Minnesota. Education is a powerful strategy to improve educational outcomes resulting in healthy individuals, families and community who have economic stability with productive careers and contribute positively to a civic and equitable society.

  • National Community Resource Center: You and many other community leaders are invited to join in this effort to begin to bring about positive change in 2024. We need your influence during the next 12 months to transform a negative environment into a community which is Full of Respect, and Who Value Others! Watch for a big announcement in January!

ACT-SO Olympics of the Mind

  • NAACP, Rochester Chapter: ACT-SO’s enrichment program supports students collaborating with local volunteers, mentors, and organizations to develop projects and participate in workshops, tutorials, and field trips.

Bounce Day (Community Resilience)

  • Bounce Day: Bounce Day aims to improve community resilience through an integrated disaster response experience that provides opportunities for education, collaboration, and innovation. Bounce Day is put on by a collaboration of Mayo Clinic researchers, educators and students, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Military medical personnel, local medical alliances, theatre groups and lay community members. Actors simulating illness (zombies) and those affected by the crumbling of society will interact with participants learning both medical and nonmedical response protocols ranging from vaccination and treatment to refugee camp management and security.

Century Heights (CH)

  • Joseph Developments LLC: New construction of 76 rental homes with 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom units. When complete, the apartment complex will provide 30 one-bedroom units, as well as services to support residents’ mental health needs. Center City will work with the county and its Housing and Redevelopment Authority on the project.

DEI Practioner Convenings

  • Rochester Area Foundation: Rochester Area Foundation has signed on in support of the Commitment to Racial Justice that was crafted by the Rochester Nonprofit Consortium. Together, we stand in solidarity with those who seek justice and racial equity. We have committed to listen, learn and act in support of the following:  addressing the policies and practices that influence racism, structural bias and inequity;    connecting to resources, organizations, and best practices to apply a race equity lens; and   building capacity within our organization and community to promote social and economic mobility and wellbeing for all residents.

DFO Community Corrections Comprehensive Plan 2015-2016

  • TBD: Dodge, Fillmore, Olmsted (DFO) Community Corrections is placed under the umbrella of Community Services in Olmsted County. Dodge and Fillmore County Court Services are separate units housed in their respective courthouses, and managed from Olmsted County. Probation services are similar in Dodge, Fillmore and Olmsted counties with common goals and outcomes. Due to smaller probation volume and FTE in Dodge and Fillmore, specialization (specialized caseloads) is not as developed, although resources are shared and clients are transported or staff travel to clients, as needed.

DMC Housing as Infrastructure

  • DMC EDA: DMC Supporting: 1. Create new home ownership opportunities; 2. Increase homeownership for People of Color; 3. Create housing for people at 50% AMI or less; 4. Enhance housing options for seniors; 5. Preserve our affordable housing stock

Future Development of Graham Park

  • County of Olmsted, MN: Graham Park has served southeast Minnesota as a community asset for more than 100 years for agriculture, community events, entertainment, and youth athletics. Olmsted County is working towards adaptive reuse and facilities conversion at Graham Park, a 60-acre parcel of public land in Rochester owned by Olmsted County. This planning assures that this site, and its 100 years of history, will continue to be a welcoming place for all residents to gather, celebrate, and learn. Expected benefits include: Ability to host additional events and activities. Enhance entertainment opportunities and quality of life in the region. Generate new tourism to the region. Positive economic impacts.

Homes for our Neighbors

  • ISAIAH: 2024-2030 HOUSING PLAN FOR OLMSTED COUNTY Background: The most recent Olmsted County Maxfield Study found that from 2020-2030, housing demand required 18,000 new housing units. 71% would need to be general-occupancy and 29% age-restricted senior housing.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. America's City for Health

  • DMC EDA: Interlocking between DMC, Olmsted County and Rochester City and Community organizations to ensure social impacts are factored into DMC project evaluation process and City Comprehensive Plan (P2S).

Apply "Community of Excellence" framework to Greater Rochester

  • Performance Excellence Network: In 2017, Communities of Excellence 2026, in partnership with the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, launched the Communities of Excellence Assessment and Recognition Program. The program has three levels: Commitment to Community Excellence, Journey to Community Excellence and the Community of Excellence Recognition. Details including criteria for submission and deadlines are available here. In parallel with Baldrige Program’s mission, the purpose of Communities of Excellence 2026 and the Assessment and Recognition Program is threefold: To develop a nationally recognized standard of community performance excellence To establish role models of that standard through the Recognition Program To encourage continuous improvement through sharing of best practices and provision of feedback to communities on the performance excellence journey that will lead to better outcomes for the residents they serve. "The Baldrige Program, and indeed the entire Baldrige community, are excited about helping communities achieve ever-higher levels of performance and improved quality of life for their residents. In fact, that is essentially the mission of the Baldrige Program: to benefit all U.S. residents through improved competitiveness. Until now, however, we have been focused on accomplishing that purpose through single organization. Partnering with Communities of Excellence 2026 enables us to carry out that mission on a much broader level, with the potential for greater reach and impact." Beam Up DEI Actions for Area CBO's

  • OpenBeam.net: Many area Community Based Organizations(CBO) to their credit are embarking on DEI projects and seek friendly guidance how to get going. OpenBeam to help identify actions that area organizations may pursue to make impacts on area's DEI needs. OpenBeam to provide assistance in two ways : (1) OpenBeam's founder, Al Lun, will serve as Diversity Council ambassador to be a conduit of information sharing between the CBO's and Diversity Council. If requested, a DC staff person may also join in the effort. (2) OpenBeam's dmcbeam.org community assets database is made available to enable community resources connectivity in general.

Caring Conversations

  • Christ United Methodist Church: There are many different types of caregivers in our communities. Examples include: family members/ friends, daycare providers, group home staff members, in-home care providers, assisted living staff members, teachers, social workers, clergy members, nutritionists, patient care assistants, respiratory/ physical/ occupational therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, doctors, etc.

Co-design Tracker

  • OpenBeam: To showcase Rochester Area's Co-design projects and to track the progress toward implementing their recommendations.

Digital Equity IT

  • Rochester Area Nonprofit Consortium: Increase access to and effective use of technological devices and programs among communities experiencing barriers in the Rochester area. To do this, we will generate immediate and longer-term solutions related to the following barriers to access: 1) technological devices/hardware with appropriate software installed (computers and tablets); 2) affordable, reliable internet; and 3) culturally appropriate education to support digital literacy.

Diversity In Action Initiative

  • Diversity in Action: Program to assist students that aren’t necessarily college bound with getting into areas that don’t require a 4 year degree. He has links with employers looking for young people who are interested in being plumbers, carpenters, electricians and etc. He is looking at how to work within the schools here in Rochester to expose young people to alternative careers. I thought that the two of you might be a good connection since quite a bit of his consideration would be working with youth from diverse backgrounds as well as supporting educators in working with the students.

Downtown Waterfront Southeast: 6th Street Bridge Concept Design

  • City of Rochester and DMC EDA: As part of the approved 2021 Downtown Waterfront S.E. Small Area Plan, a series of public realm improvements projects was identified to create a cohesive, connected, and activated redevelopment district. These public realm improvement projects not only provide improved access and connections to the district, they also elevate the overall experience, enhance the natural systems on a degraded site, and provide confidence that the Destination Medical Center (DMC) and the City of Rochester are committed to redeveloping the site and improving adjacent neighborhoods.

Education, Health and Recreation Space (DMC UMR/Rec sub-district)

  • TBD: This sub-district incorporates UMR's Master Plan and the northern edge of Soldier's Field as an anchoring element to the DMC Development District and strategies for growth. This sub-district integrates and urban college campus and recreational uses into the district, thereby creating another catalyst for the growth of retail, entertainment and residential uses in the downtown. It is anticipated that UMR will have its first building built in this area before the end of the first phase of the DMC implementation process.
